Lefranc n'était plus que l'ombre de lui-même. Souvenons-nous du naufrage graphique des derniers Chaillet, des scénarios bancals, rapides, parfois incompréhensibles de Martin vieillissant... En passant la main de son vivant, d'abord à Francis Carin, qui eut la lourde charge d'assumer la fin du Lefranc, ancré dans le présent - de la volonté-même de son créateur -, puis à André Taymans, J. Martin prit une sage décision. Ses histoires étaient illisibles, et même la séquentialité était mise à mal dans "L'Ultimatum", son dernier "Lefranc". Puis ce fut l'ère des expérimentations graphiques. Regric adopta un style tentant de se rapprocher de Bob de Moor, mais empreint de maladresses, sans vie - et Maury ne fit qu'une brève excursion dans le domaine du fantastique, qui n'était pas du tout dans l'esprit des aventures martiniennes. Cortegianni avait, de longue date, l'envie de faire un "Lefranc". Il eut l'excellente idée de chercher à imposer Christophe Alvès, un dessinateur discret, dont le précédent album, un reboot d'Harry Dickson en bande dessinée, pouvait laisser augurer du meilleur. On découvre dans cet album un dessinateur efficace, qui connaît son travail, n'hésite pas à surprendre par sa mise en page, conservant son style personnel tout en demeurant proche de l'esprit de la série. Il ne copie personne, ne cherche pas à prendre la place d'un Grand Ancien, mais... oeuvre pour la série. Le résultat est à la hauteur des espérances. Un début laisse présager une suite fantastique, mais le réalisme reprend le dessus.
